FORMA GIS Capability

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system of integrated computer hardware and software that store, manage, analyze, edit, output, and visualize geographic data. A viewshed is created by using the elevation value of each cell of a digital elevation model (DEM) to determine visibility to or from a certain cell. Viewshed analysis will identify the area visible on the terrain surface from a specific observer point. The height of the observer point is specified (in this case, 6 feet). This is a valuable tool in land planning to provide an overall understanding of the topography of the project area to assist in the site planning which will result in the minimizing of the view impacts of development.
